Thanks to all who donated to The American Music Therapy Association through our FundBRAISER. We ended up bringing in a grand total of $1,000 for this awesome organization. But what in the world IS music therapy?

The official AMTA definition: Music therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program.

Music therapists work with a variety of populations, including those with Alzheimer’s disease, autism spectrum disorder, traumatic brain injury, and more. Although music therapy is still a young profession, public awareness of music therapy is rapidly increasing, thanks to quality research studies, news stories, and observable outcomes. Along with a donation to the American Music Therapy Association, we asked that a recipe was sent with each donation made through our FundBRAISER. Here are our top three winners (in no particular order):

1. Chocolate Peppermint “Piety” Pie, submitted by Dr. Robert Groene

Chocolate Peppermint “Piety” Pie
Recipe originally from Audrey Groene, from the 3M Company Folks around 1962


2/3 cup butter (=10.5 tbs)
1 cup sugar
3 eggs (egg beaters can be used)
2 oz. Baker’s semi-sweet chocolate squares
2 oz. Baker’s unsweetened squares
1/4 tsp. peppermint extract


Cream butter, add sugar & eggs, beat until light & creamy (15 min.) Add melted chocolate to batter & beat till fluffy. Pour into graham cracker crust & chill 3-4 hours. Top with whipped cream and crushed peppermint candies.

2. Risotto with Porcini Mushrooms and Mascarpone, submitted by Molly Mulligan

3. Black Bean Feta Dip, submitted by Kelly Judge: 

Black Bean Feta Dip

2 cans of black beans (drained and rinsed)
1 can of corn
4 oz. crumbled feta
one bunch of green onions, chopped
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup oil
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
1 bag of Scoops chips

Preparation: Combine first four ingredients in a bowl.  Whisk together sugar, oil, and vinegar. Pour into bowl with other ingredients.
