How many years does a restaurant have to be around to be considered a town “classic”? At the very least, the food, the service, the atmosphere, must all be reliably excellent since the first time you stepped in, years ago. Half & Half certainly fits that bill. It’s not a hidden gem by any means, located along bustling Maryland Avenue in the heart of Clayton, MO. Half & Half has been, and still remains, one of our favorite spots in St. Louis for brunch.

It’s always a special experience when you have a go-to place for food around town, and then years later get to bring your kid there. When we took our son for his fourth birthday brunch, the waiter came right over and asked if he’d like something to color. Our son’s eyes widened as the waiter brought multiple thick coloring books and a cup filled with rainbow crayons for him to enjoy. He spoke to our son warmly and patiently, making him feel like the most important guest in the restaurant.

Scanning Half & Half on the day we most recently went, I saw businessmen and women meeting over lunch, old friends meeting for coffee, girlfriends meeting for brunch, what I thought might have been a first date, and a few other families with sticky syrupy kids. It was an eclectic assortment of people and tables were turned fairly quickly as people continued to come in and out during our meal.

Natural light poured through the windows, making these pictures pretty effortless. Our son loved the chocolate chip pancakes and bacon. Neil enjoyed the sausage biscuit, which truly was enough food for two meals. Tess’ Toast is a fan-favorite I had to once again return to trying, with fresh blueberries and lemon curd adorned around the crisped-to-perfection French toast.

If you’re looking for a family-friendly brunch spot with a great patio, don’t forget about Half & Half. I can bet in another 15 years, it will stand as great of a restaurant as it is now.
