Halloween is coming up, and I’ve had conversations with a lot of parents about how it’s going to look different this year. Some families are getting creative with modifying trick-or-treating traditions, some are attending outdoor activities like Boo at the Zoo or Haunted Wagon Rides at Eckert’s. Others are doing drive through events like Halloween at Grant’s Farm. Gathering with friends around a bonfire might be more popular (and safe) this year than cramming in a haunted house.
You know one thing that doesn’t have to change? The candy.
All I want on Halloween is Reese’s peanut butter cups. You can have all of my Snickers, Milky Way, Babe Ruth, and Kit Kats, as long as I can have your Reese’s. To me, chocolate and peanut butter is the ultimate combo. As I was looking for a fun way to celebrate Halloween this year and also indulge in my favorite flavor combo, I stumbled upon Food & Wine’s recipe for a Double-Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie.
I’ve really been wanting to make a fall tart, so I made this pie in a tart pan. I’m still a little confused on the difference between a pie, tart, tarte, torte, so if anyone would like to help me learn the difference that would be great. We made this one in the new pretty tart pan I got from Williams-Sonoma, so we’re calling it a tart! Ha! No matter what you call this dessert, it was delicious. Side note: When using a tart pan, make sure you hold the bottom of the pan properly so the entire tart doesn’t pop out! Yes, that happened to me. Yes, I caught it. Close call.
This recipe is like a grown-up peanut butter cup. After spreading the chocolate ganache, I made a white chocolate web, inspired by Lindsay over at Life, Love and Sugar by melting two ounces of Lindt white chocolate with just a splash of heavy cream. Drizzle making a spiral, starting from the center of the tart and working your way out. Then, drag a toothpick from the center out. As Lindsay suggests, I made eight lines from the center to the edge.
No matter how Halloween looks at your house this year, I hope you find time to do something with your family that’s fun. For us, it was making this tart and eating the entire thing. Happy Halloween, ya ghouls!
